Traces of Pope John Paul II (Great) in Southern Poland
The Pilgrim Route gives you a chance to follow in the footsteps of the man who was to become one of the greatest Popes and human beings in history. Pope John Paul II (formerly Karol Wojtyła) is a national hero in . Born in Wadowice, a small town very close to Krakow, he became the bishop of Krakow at age 38 years. You will walk in the footsteps of this political and spiritual giant when you tour Kraków - Tyniecka Street - Łagiewniki - Częstochowa - Piekary Śląskie - Kalwaria Zebrzydowska - Wadowice - Auschwitz - Ludźmierz - Zakopane - Wieliczka - Tyniec.


1st DAY
Arrival in Kraków, installation in the hotel.
Holy Mass after arrival in St. Florian Church in Kraków – in this church during a period from August '49 to September '51 Pope John Paul II served as a chaplain to the students of university and to health workers.
Dinner in the hotel. 

 

2nd DAY
After breakfast guided tour of Kraków including entrance to Wawel Castle (The Polish Acropolis. Originally Romanesque, later Gothic, the castle is mostly a Renaissance construction in its present form.), Wawel Royal Cathedral, Cloth Hall, Pope’s window in See Metropolitan, St. Mary’s Church with one of the largest Gothic altars in Europe which was carved in linden wood by Master Veit Stoss.
On the way to Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki we pass through Tyniecka Street where Pope lived as an 18 years old boy with His father.
App. at 15.00 participation in rosary to Divine Mercy and sightseeing Sanctuary. The Centre of Divine Mercy was established by Pope John Paul II during his stay in Poland in August 2002. Next to the old church containing the mortal remains of Saint Sister Faustina, the herald of Divine Mercy, a new basilica was built to the design of professor Witold Cenckiewicz.

3rd DAY
After breakfast departure to Częstochowa. City where The Pauline Monastery is located. It is Poland’s most important religious sanctuary, famous for its miraculous icon of Black Madonna. Throughout centuries, the monastery gathered a wealth of art object and precious votive offerings.
Participation in a Holly Mass.
Trip To Kraków via Piekary Śląskie - the most important in Upper Silesia pilgrimage centre. Our Lady and St. Bartholomew basilica, in its present shape from the years 1842-49is located here. It is called sanctuary of Holy Virgin of Piekary (from the 17th century) -neo-Gothic indulgence church and Calvary with 39 chapels from 1896.

4th DAY
After breakfast trip to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska - a huge monastery with beautiful located Stations of the Cross – each one a separate chapel. The newest acquisition on the UNESCO List of the World Heritage in Poland. The excursion includes a visit to the nearby Wadowice.
A town situated on the Skawa River, 55 km away from Krakow, was an important spot on the trade route from Kraków to Silesia. One of the most interesting monuments of Wadowice is the parish church dating back to the 15th c., located in the Market Square. It was rebuilt in the 18th c. but preserved its gothic presbytery till the present. 

   

Further trip to Auschwitz - which is the German version of the Polish Oświęcim, is known worldwide as the site of a notorious Nazi concentration camp.
The first section of the concentration camp, Auschwitz I, was established immediately after the Nazi occupation of Poland in September 1939. Among its first prisoners were the professors of Krakow’s Jagiellonian University, many of whom died here. In all about 120,000 Poles, Gypsies and other nationalities died or were executed in this section of the Auschwitz concentration camp. In 1942 the second section, Auschwitz-Birkenau, was built for the sole purpose of housing and exterminating Jews brought here by train from all over Europe. Parts of both camps have been preserved as a memorial to those that died.

5th DAY
After breakfast departure to Zakopane via Ludzmierz where Sanctuary of Our Lady Queen of Podhale is located. Whith its origins reaching the 13th century, Ludzmierz is the oldest parish in Podhale. In the basilica, is the cherished miraculous figure of Our Lady known as Gaździna Podhala.
Short guided tour in Zakopane sightseeing Old Church and Cementery on Kościeliska Street. Visiting the longest village in Podhale region – Chochołów - (with the traditional, wooden buildings), Sanctuary on Krzeptówki Street and then participation in a Holly Mass in The Church of Our Lady of Fatima - voting offering for saving John Paul II's life on 13 May 1981. In July 1987 the building site was blessed.

Departure to Krakow. 


   

6th DAY
After breakfast departure for a guided tour in Wieliczka Salt Mine – one of the most ancient mines in the world. It has been operating since the 13th century with no intermissions.
In 1978, it was listed as UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site. The tourist route open for visitors connects three levels, and reaches 135 meters under the surface. Besides the Tourist Route, the underground passages and chambers house the Kraków Salt-Works Museum, one of the largest mining-related museums in Europe. 

 

In the afternoon trip to one of the most magnificent Benedictine Abbeys of Poland. The trip will begin at the dock below the Wawel Hill in Krakow. With full steam ahead you will then float to Tyniec. Benedictine Abbey at Tyniec - first it was replaced by a Gothic structure, next by the 16th-century Renaissance one. And the abbey's present Baroque church dates back to the early 17th century.
Participation in Organ concert in Benedictine Abbey will be unforgettable experience.
